Chronic kidney disease: Updates, priorities, and current challenges
Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition affecting a significant proportion of the population but it is often unrecognized and underdiagnosed. Nurses should be aware of CKD because it is often comorbid with other, more widely recognized conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. This article discusses the prevalence, diagnosis, screening, and prevention of CKD, as well as guideline-directed interventions to delay progression and significant nurse strategies when caring for patients with CKD.
Keywords: KDIGO guidelines; chronic kidney disease; diabetes; heart disease; hypertension; proteinuria.
