Recurrent peritonitis due to Shewanella putrefaciens in a peritoneal dialysis patient

Jorge Iberico Castro et al. IDCases. .

Abstract

Shewanella putrefaciens is a gram-negative, nonfermenting, and motile bacillus. It can be found in freshwater, saltwater, and soil. This case report presents a 36-year-old man referred from the nephrology service with recurrent secondary peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis. Multidrug-resistant S. putrefaciens was isolated from peritoneal fluid. The patient showed improvement after Piperacillin/tazobactam treatment. Preventive measures against nosocomial infections should be comprehensive, including aseptic techniques, regular monitoring, appropriate antibiotic treatment, and timely replacement of devices associated with infection risk. In our case, the favorable outcome was attributed to antibiotic therapy and the replacement of dialysis devices.

Keywords: Shewanella putrefaciens; antibiotic resistance; nosocomial infections.
