Atypical Hand Infections
Abstract
Atypical hand infections can be caused by a wide variety of organisms. Some present as superficial or deep infections with the appearance of a common bacterial infection, whereas others follow a more indolent and atypical course. Without clinical awareness of the diversity of organisms that can cause hand infections, treatment can be delayed. Requesting appropriate laboratory testing is imperative when there is suspicion of an atypical hand infection. Often, surgical treatment paired with medical treatment is necessary to eradicate the causative organism. Here, we detailed several bacteria and fungi that may be encountered. Prior knowledge of presentation, history, and course will help guide identification and effective treatment. We also offer two case examples from our own institution.
