Evidence of immunochemical differences between free and bound secretory piece

Evidence of immunochemical differences between free and bound secretory piece

P J van Munster et al. Immunology. 1969 Aug.

Abstract

The present study of human colostrum and human milk showed that normal milk contains a considerable amount of free secretory piece in addition to IgA-bound secretory piece. This free S-piece does not show complete, but only partial identity with bound S-piece. An antiserum to the specific determinants of this free S-piece could be prepared, which antiserum will no longer react with bound S-piece. It is argued that the molecular weight of free S-piece occurring in human milk is approximately 90,000, and it seems likely that free S-piece is present in a tetrameric form.

The antigenic differences between free and bound S-piece are probably due to differences in quaternary structure between the tetrameric free form and the IgA-bound form.
