Intra-amniotic prostaglandin F2alpha termination of midtrimester abortion
Abstract
PIP: A 100-mg amniotic injection of prostaglandin F2 alpha was given for abortion induction of 16-22 week pregnancies in 50 cases. 48 (96%) aborted within 20 hours (range, 10 hours +30 minutes-19 hours + 20 minutes). Mean injection delivery interval was 13 hours and 44 minutes. All abortions were complete. 2 patients had not aborted by 24 hours and had no contractions at all; these occurred in primigravidas at 16 and 17 weeks of gestation. All patients who had 18 weeks or more of amenorrhea aborted, the majority within 15 hours. Few complications occurred, and none needed treatment. On follow-up, which lasted 12 weeks, no patient showed signs of genital infection or symptoms of retained products.
