Legal abortions: early medical complications. An interim report of the Joint Program for the Study of Abortion
Abstract
PIP: A 12-state study by the Joint Program for the Study of Abortion (JPSA) confirms that late abortion is 3 to 4 times more risky than early abortion. The major complication rate per 100 abortion patients was .8 for abortions less than 12 weeks and 2.5 for abortions more than 13 weeks. First trimester abortions seemed to be safer after 8 weeks gestation. Complications in second trimester abortions were less after 16 weeks. The complication rate was significantly higher among non-private patients than private patients. This difference seemed to be related to the quality of care. Patients who were aborted by suction on an outpatient basis had fewer total and major complications than inpatients. This may have been due to the larger volume of suction abortions carried out and therefore greater experience of the operator.
