Abstract

Depressive illness remains an underdiagnosed, and often misdiagnosed entity, in all branches of medicine. Some of the factors involved are discussed: doctor, patient, environment, diagnosis, treatment. Disorders of mood, affective disorders, or simple depressive illnesses are by no means new to the human race.
