At risk for Huntington's disease: who should know what and when?

A Rosenfeld. Hastings Cent Rep. 1984 Jun.

Abstract

KIE: Scientific progress in developing a test to detect Huntington's disease in its presymptomatic state is described. Ethical dilemmas that will intensify with the perfection of a genetic "marker" test based on recombinant DNA techniques are identified as revolving mainly around the question of disclosure. The pros and cons of informing those who will develop the dread disease--and the implications of revealing this information to family members, employers, and health insurers--are discussed.
