Abstract

Comparative investigations on the antigenic relation and the immunogenic properties of the foot-and-mouth disease virus types O, A, and C. were carried out with the aid of the quantitative CFT and experiments with guinea pigs. It was established that the viruses of a given type were closely related antigenically and belonged to one and the same subtype group (R greater than of equal to 70 per cent). Immunogenicity studies revealed that strains O1Y A5f, C 564, and Cf were best in terms of immunogenic properties. It was also found that, generally, type O strains were weak in this respect, while all strains of type C tested had good immunogenic properties.
