Maternal-fetal thyroid function in pregnancy

Abstract

It is now recognized that pregnancy is associated with significant changes in maternal thyroid function that are largely mediated by the placenta. The author summarizes the understanding of these changes during pregnancy and follows with a discussion of fetal thyroid system ontogenesis.
