[Longitudinal study of the effect of hormonal contraceptives on clinical parameters of the gingiva. 1. Gingivitis indices and plaque index]
Abstract
PIP: The selective gingival index, the sulcus bleeding index, and the plaque index were determined in the maxillary and mandibular anterior regions of 22 women before and 2, 4, and 6 months after application of hormonal contraceptives. The values obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using the significance test of Newman and Keuls. The values of the plaque index showed no significant changes. In contrast to this, the values of the gingivitis indices increased immediately after application of the hormonal contraceptives, and then they fell (an indication of hormonal regulation) without reaching the initial data. Whereas the degree of gingival inflammation is slightly increased by the hormonal contraceptives, the tendency to bleeding must be attributed to facultative symptoms. (author's)
