Infant, child and maternal mortality and associated conditions of health in the Greater Kabul region of Afghanistan
Abstract
This acticle presents an analysis of data obtained by the ad hoc Survey of Infant and Early Childhood Mortality in Relation to fertility Patterns, that was conducted in the Greater Kabul region of Afghanistan between 1972 and 1975(2). It begins with an outline of the survey's methodology and some general background information on the population under study. We then derive estimates of fertility and infant and child mortality. This is followed by an examination of the reproductive health of women. We then outline the findings of an intensive enquiry into the correlates and causes of the child deaths observed by the survey. The level of child care of the population is examined with reference to patterns of feeding and immunizaiton. Finally we draw together and comment upon the main findings of the survey.
