Suppression of induced humoral autoimmune response by dexamethasone in rats

Suppression of induced humoral autoimmune response by dexamethasone in rats

S P Makker. Clin Exp Immunol. 1978 Dec.

Abstract

The effect of dexamethasone on the humoral antibody response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) and on the humoral autoantibody response to a renal tubular antigen was studied in rats. The Heymann model of autoimmune, immune complex-induced glomerulonephritis was employed for studying the autoimmune response. It was found that dexamethasone did not appear to have much effect on the humoral antibody response to SRBC (P>0·05), but it had a pronounced effect on the humoral autoantibody response (P<0·0001). These results may be interpreted to suggest that, in rats, the cellular events and the mechanism of humoral autoantibody response may be different from those involved in the generation of humoral antibody response to SRBC, because dexamethasone seems to have a pronounced effect on the former and very little on the latter.
