Optimum use of rubella immunization

Abstract

Although great strides have been made in eliminating congenital rubella syndrome, present efforts may actually increase its incidence in the future. The family physician performs an essential role by screening for rubella immunity and immunizing susceptible individuals. The patient's immunization history is not reliable in identifying susceptible individuals. Women who are in their reproductive years should have laboratory documentation of rubella immunity.
