Perinatal mortality in an industrial hospital
Abstract
PIP: In an effort to correlate perinatal mortality (PNMR) with age, parity, antenatal care, obstetric history, birth weight, and gestational age, 276 stillbirths and neonatal deaths were studied between January 1976 and February 1977. Results indicated a PNMR incidence rate of 52.6/1000 which was lower than previous studies indicated. It is surmised that antenatal care in 56% of the cases attributed to the low rates. The authors also found PNMR 7 times higher in twin babies compared to single births; 61.8% of PNMR was due to bad obstetrical history indicating a lack of knowledge about the importance of monitoring high risk pregnancies; antepartum and intrapartum anoxia was responsible for 56.15% of the perinatal mortalities. Low birth weight appears to be the most crucial predisposing factor of perinatal mortality while extreme prematurity (36.57%) was the primary cause of neonatal deaths.
