The microscopic interaction between silicone and the surrounding tissues
Abstract
Biocompatibility is a pivotal issue in the use of any implantable biomaterial. This article describes some of the issues surrounding the use of silicone implants for first metatarsophalangeal joint prostheses. The focus is on the interactions between the implant and the surrounding tissues. Common histologic findings are also discussed.
