Hyperthyroidism in the elderly

Abstract

Hyperthyroidism must be considered whenever there is a change in an older person's physical or mental functioning. Screening tests will hopefully lead to an earlier diagnosis; however, the best way to recognize this problem early is to have a high index of suspicion and familiarity with appropriate thyroid function tests. Symptoms are notable for their atypical presentation, with some elderly presenting in an apathetic state. The most common cause of thryotoxicosis is a toxic nodular gland, and treatment usually requires radioiodine.
