[Exudative retinal detachment in intraorbital echinococcal cyst]
Abstract
Background: Orbital manifestation of hydatid cyst can occur in 1%, however, an exudative retinal detachment due to an intraorbital hydatid cyst is an uncommon finding.
Case report: A 20-year-old Turkish woman with an orbital hydatid cyst and an accompanying exudative retinal detachment.
Results: Serology and histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of an orbital hydatid cyst. After excision of the cyst in toto the retina reattached spontaneously.
Conclusion: In the differential diagnosis of a proptosis with an exudative retinal detachment, although rare, the diagnosis of an orbital echinococcis should be considered.
