[Inactivity and immobilization]
Abstract
Bed rest and immobilization of joints are amongst the most frequently prescribed therapies. However, inactivity, elimination of gravity and immobilization lead to multiple physiological changes. Well known are effects on the cardiovascular, the cardiorespiratory, the metabolic and the endocrinologic systems, the psyche, the bone and muscle tissue. Early mobilization and measures to support mobility in chronic cases are of major importance in avoiding structural damage.
