The story of Laurens
Abstract
KIE: Spreeuwenberg, a Dutch physician, recounts the circumstances leading to the death of his infant son by an injection of morphine given by the child's pediatrician. Temporary respiratory failure had left the boy with severe neurological damage. The author contrasts his son's case with that of a Dutch newborn with Down syndrome and duodenal atresia who, at the request of his parents, was denied surgery which could have prevented his death.
