The concepts of selfobject function and empathy in couples therapy
Abstract
A model is advanced for couples therapy that uses a dyadic approach in which the partners bring about change in themselves as well as in the other by learning to tolerate and support that change. The model utilises concepts of selfobject function and empathic interaction between the partners; these are taken from Kohut's theory of human development.
