Effects of sex hormones on oncogenesis in rat urinary bladder by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)-nitrosamine
Abstract
The effects of testosterone propionate, estradiol, and estriol on the oncogenesis of male rats' bladder induced by oral administration of the carcinogen N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)-nitrosamine (BBN) were examined. There were significant differences between the testosterone propionate-administered and estradiol-administered groups and also between the testosterone propionate-administered and estriol-administered groups in the incidence of bladder tumors.
PIP: Effects of sex hormones on oncogenesis in male rat urinary bladder induced by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)-nitrosamine (BBN) were examined. The incidence of bladder tumors was significantly higher in the testosterone propionate group than in the estriol and estradiol groups (p less than .05). There were no marked differences between the BBN group and the other groups. The results indicate that the external sex hormones could influence the experimental oncogenesis in rats' bladder and that the oncogenesis induced chemically could be a result of the host-carcinogen-drug relationship.
