[Depression in the child and adolescent]
Abstract
Changes in criteria for Major Depression introduced in the DSM-IV will impact on the diagnosis of children and adolescents. Specifically, the new criteria are more rigorous, and the excessively high rate of Major Depression in epidemiological samples should be reduced. Atypical depression is now recognized as a distinct diagnosis. It appears to be common in adolescent depression, and its recognition should influence treatment.
