Sexual dysfunction following radiotherapy for cervical cancer

Sexual dysfunction following radiotherapy for cervical cancer

L M Burke. Br J Nurs. 1996.

Abstract

The majority of patients with cervical cancer are treated with radiotherapy, which has many potential side-effects. This article reviews the literature, emanating primarily from the USA, which seeks to determine why sexual dysfunction is so often a problem for patients following such treatment and why nurses appear to be so reluctant to deal with this issue. The exact nature and severity of the difficulties experienced by women will be examined and also the reasons why nurses appear so reluctant to deal with this issue. Finally, possible solutions and strategies for action will be suggested.
