Methodology of biofeedback

Abstract

Biofeedback is derived from psychological learning theory based on operant conditioning. It involves a process of teaching the patient to recognize and subsequently control a physiological function. This is usually achieved by representing such a parameter as an easily perceived signal (e.g. visual or auditory) which the patient then learns to modify. Biofeedback may be used on its own or as part of an overall treatment programme.
