Prompted voiding in the long-term care facility
Abstract
Approximately 50% of residents in United States long-term care facilities are incontinent of urine. Federal regulations require nursing facilities to move away from caring for incontinent residents in a custodial fashion and toward a rehabilitative model. Prompted voiding is one technique that has been thoroughly tested in long-term care facilities and found to significantly improve continence among residents. Provision of prompted voiding is labor intensive, and its application in long-term care facilities requires that management systems be in place to develop and maintain staff participation in the program.
