Mycobacterial cervical lymphadenitis: a review

E L Fitzpatrick et al. J La State Med Soc. 1996 Nov.

Abstract

Over the last decade mycobacterial infections have been shown to be on the rise in the United States and worldwide. The diagnosis of mycobacterial cervical lymphadenitis, otherwise known as scrofula, should thus be entertained when faced with the hallmark presentation of chronic, nontender cervical lymphadenopathy. This article reviews current epidemiology, bacteriology, diagnostic techniques, and treatment options for tuberculous and nontuberculous mycobacterial cervical lymphadenitis.
