The infant of the diabetic mother
Abstract
Care of the pregnant woman with diabetes and the infant of that mother presents a challenge to both perinatal and neonatal nurses. This article reviews the pathophysiology of diabetes in pregnancy; discusses various complications of the fetus, newborn, and child; outlines management strategies aimed at decreasing complications and improving outcomes; and addresses specific nursing responsibilities related to these management strategies.
