Acetabular reconstruction in revision total hip arthroplasty: a review of options
Abstract
Revision of the acetabular component in total hip arthroplasty occurs for reasons such as polyethylene wear and osteolysis, recurrent dislocation, and mechanical failure. The major problems in acetabular revision surgery are loss of bone stock, difficulty in achieving stability, and alteration of the hip center of rotation. The goal of reconstruction is to use or restore the supportive structural integrity of the acetabulum to create a situation similar to primary arthroplasty. There are several options for reconstruction in acetabular revision surgery. This paper reviews contemporary revision options and concepts relating to the acetabulum.
