Streptococcus gallolyticus subspecies pasteurianus (biotype II/2), a newly reported cause of adult meningitis

Abstract

We report the first case of adult meningitis confirmed to be due to Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus. Phenotypically reported as Streptococcus bovis biotype II/2, 16S rRNA sequencing revealed S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus. Because of taxonomic uncertainties, S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus may be an underrecognized agent of systemic infections.

Identification of clinical isolates by 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis in relation to type strains of the Streptococcus bovis group (GenBank accession numbers are shown in parentheses). Sequences were aligned by using Greengenes, and the phylogram of the aligned sequences was generated using MEGA 3.1 with neighbor-joining methods. Bootstrap values (based on 500 replicates) are represented at each node when values are >50%, and the branch length index is represented below the phylogram.
